Overview:
I am a student at Arizona State University studying business
and communication. The
interdisciplinary studies program (BIS) is a great way for students interested
in multiple fields to formulate a degree involving both. I feel that Business and
Communication
are both essential to Business these days, and have satisfied Arizona State
University’s degree requirements for both.
I chose this program because it was the only way for my
degree to be satisfied two-fold.
Instead of my degree being specific to one field only, I have touched on
two areas. Business and
communication are both necessary to be a successful businessperson and I should
excel in these fields due to my degree requirement.
Upon completion of four required core classes known as BIS
classes, I have learned that it is very important to have a vision. I now have a vision
of exactly what I
want to bring to the table as an employee. As well, I feel that I will be a more motivated person
because I know what’s important for me to accomplish in my life, and I have a
means to accomplish such things.
These classes gave me great insight into what it means to set goals and
strive for them.
Two Concentration Areas:
Business: My
first area of concentration is business.
I took classes in finance, accounting, statistics, economics,
management, and supply chain management.
I feel that these classes have all helped form me into a well-rounded
businessperson. With these classes
in mind, I have gained knowledge of simple things like how to make a warehouse
most efficient to how taxes are figured.
Communication:
The second area of concentration that I chose will allow me to be a more
effective communicator in everything I do. This was all made possible through my classes in human
communication, gendered communication, small-group communication,
organizational communication, and conflict-negotiation. As an effective communicator,
I have
learned ways to engage people in conversation in an effective business mean.
Another Learning Experience:
Upon completion of high school, I was asked to represent the
state of Arizona as an ambassador in Australia. I was chosen by having good grades, good behavior, and
through my success on the football field.
I learned what it means to represent the United States of America
overseas. In addition I met a lot
of nice people, and formed relationships that will last a lifetime.

6 necessary and transferable skills:
Powerpoint Presentations: I have created and presented many powerpoint presentations
involving many different subject matters.
I consider myself a master of powerpoint.
Visio: I have
used the Microsoft Visio system to create a blueprint of the service
industry. Using this, I can help
ensure that customer satisfaction is maximized in the service industry. This program
takes into account many
different variables that I am proficient in identifying.
Statistics: I
worked on many projects determining a tolerable margin of error. One project was using
concrete
trucks. Doing certain
calculations, I can maximize a fleet of concrete trucks within a certain
tolerable error which was set at time.
This helped coordinate an efficient fleet, with reasonable delivery
times.
Teamwork: My
small group communication class ended with a final project. My small group was asked
to do an
organizational audit. We met
outside the class to observe and analyze a corporation. Using our observation results,
we were
able to create a powerpoint presentation, and present it to our professor.
Leadership: I
managed ten employees in a warehouse for years. My duties involved motivating people on a daily basis. I have found
how to get the most out of
employees is by being a good leader.
Creative problem solving: I have been asked to solve many problems from my job in
management, to assigned problems in school, and problems that come up in life. When
something goes wrong, I am very
good at taking an educated approach to arrive at the solution.
Experience:
In
order to satisfy my degree requirement for Arizona State University, I was
asked to submit resumes and set up interviews for an internship position. I decided
to take an internship
position at MD Helicopters in Mesa, Arizona. As an intern, I was asked to take on a special project
identifying critical parts. Once I
have identified the critical part, I work with many different departments
within the company to create a solution.
These departments include tooling, supply chain management, engineering,
supplier quality, production, and accounting. It is my job to work hand in hand with the department
managers to get the critical part in our warehouse as quickly and cost
efficient as possible. I feel that
I am learning a lot about the corporate world. This knowledge will be valuable to me no matter what I do in
life.
Meaning of Work:
I truly believe that you can’t have anything in this world
unless you work for it. I have
been blessed greatly, but would like a lot of stuff. In order to accomplish my goals and dreams, hard work is
necessary. I believe that a job
well done is a job that one can take to the heart. Using this knowledge, I, as a human being become more
valuable. This value will allow my
family and friends to enjoy my presence.
Where do I want to go from here?
Upon completion of my degree, I want to accomplish a
lot. First of all, I would like to
start a family and be a great father and husband. In order to do this, I have set many goals that I have
identified in my personal action plan.
This plan will allow me to one day retire with a feeling that I
accomplished what I wanted in life.
I would like to be a successful businessperson.
